The rivalry between Joker and Akechi is painted in such an interesting way (it reminds me a lot of Light vs. L in Death Note). The constant game of cat-and-mouse the two play is such a riveting tale of the dueling ideals of justice - and that battle is precisely what this tune was written about! In writing this tune, I did give myself the challenge of trying to write music that actively didn't sound like Persona 5's soundtrack (there were a few spots I just couldn't help myself). My primary musical inspirations for this tune included Zac Zinger (in particular, "Hiphopcrisy" from his record "Fulfillment" comes to mind), as well as the big band music of Bob Mintzer. This is one of my favorite things I've written in a really long time and I would love for as many people to hear it as possible, so if you enjoy this please consider sending it to friends & colleagues you think might also enjoy it! I wrote this tune after a very serious long-term relationship I was in ended abruptly. While this chart is primarily about the bittersweetness of a romantic breakup, those feelings can also apply to the end of any kind of valuable interpersonal relationship. Whether it's a life partner or a close friend you've drifted apart from, there's almost always a fondness for the memories you created together that'll be missed--even if the end of that relationship is ultimately for the best. The memory of what things used to be often left me with the thought that in another lifetime, things might've worked out differently--hence the title." I'm always a little hesitant to cover music that has repetitive or non-melodic vocals in it because I have a hard time writing around them, but in this instance I felt completely fine just removing them because this band is THAT TIGHT (seriously, go give everyone in this band a follow. Parts of this arrangement were heavily inspired by "Hideaway" by Jacob Collier, but honestly my favorite part of writing this arrangement was simply expanding a bit upon the original instrumentation of this tune. In particular, one thing I LOVE about how this came together was Khrys' flugelhorn playing - their lead playing on this arrangement was so incredibly tasteful, and their solo still blows my mind every time I hear it. As I got recordings from the band, I slowly began to realize there were two things I needed to put the finishing touches on this track - so, special thanks to my friend Tye for coming to record a vocal double on this track, and to my friend Joseph for bowing some percussion to help make just a few moments in the arrangement pop even more than they already did. --------------------------------------------------- We are Split Screen! Being the JRPG fan that I am, I couldn't think of a more appropriate tune to start Split Screen with! The music of Chrono Trigger has always had a hold on me, and Corridors of Time has been one of my favorites for the longest time (it may be my second "Dearly Beloved", and if you've been here for a long time you know what I mean by that). By far, my favorite part to write was the metric modulation toward the middle - you'll know it when you hear it ;) We will be launching our next video in a few weeks!
