Parts of this arrangement were heavily inspired by "Hideaway" by Jacob Collier, but honestly my favorite part of writing this arrangement was simply expanding a bit upon the original instrumentation of this tune. In particular, one thing I LOVE about how this came together was Khrys' flugelhorn playing - their lead playing on this arrangement was so incredibly tasteful, and their solo still blows my mind every time I hear it. As I got recordings from the band, I slowly began to realize there were two things I needed to put the finishing touches on this track - so, special thanks to my friend Tye for coming to record a vocal double on this track, and to my friend Joseph for bowing some percussion to help make just a few moments in the arrangement pop even more than they already did. --------------------------------------------------- We are Split Screen! Parts of my arrangement of this tune was partially inspired by the music of @AberdeenTheBand, and finding a way to bridge the gap between that idea and the sort of "soft funk" approach I took at the beginning was a fun challenge that I really enjoyed working on. Making music on your own is fun, but MAN is it so much more rewarding to work on with a group of incredible musicians like this one. Being the JRPG fan that I am, I couldn't think of a more appropriate tune to start Split Screen with! The music of Chrono Trigger has always had a hold on me, and Corridors of Time has been one of my favorites for the longest time (it may be my second "Dearly Beloved", and if you've been here for a long time you know what I mean by that). By far, my favorite part to write was the metric modulation toward the middle - you'll know it when you hear it ;) We will be launching our next video in a few weeks! My intent with this group is to maintain a schedule of roughly one video per month, eventually culminating in an album of high quality VGM jazz arrangements - to give you all something to look forward to :) --------------------------------------------------- We are Split Screen! For being one of my favorite game series, it's sure been awhile since I've covered anything from it. I feel like I go in spurts with this series, sometimes it's the only game on my mind and I want to do all the music from it, sometimes I don't. The arrangement! Yes, I stole some from the Basie/Foster "Blues in Hoss' Flat" - I played that chart A LOT in college and even though it got old in the moment, saying it's a classic would be sorely understating how great that chart is. Other things... not so Basie. There were certain things I really wanted to get out of writing this arrangement like the drum setup of the second half of the A sections, the two feel on the "bridge" (sometimes I struggle deciding what is the bridge on certain VGM tunes), and plugging in a couple of blues choruses on the solo section. Really not sure what'll be my next video!
